French comics art auction to help the homeless

Marko Ajdarc, editor of the excellent Brazilian comics site Neorama dos Quadrinhos saw our recent story on the auction of artwork from Fix and Foxi in Germany for a charity cause and follows it up with an exciting related event in France. Thanks a lot for the tip Marko.

95 9th Art artists in favour of the homeless

A very special auction will be held in Paris on March 10 2007, in an official auction house called Interencheres.

95 comics artists and press cartoonists have donated original works to be sold in favour of the NGO Droit au Logement, a charity that deals with homeless people in France.

Despite the great number of artists, the list is packed with well know names. The poster is drawn by Jacques Tardi, and the list of creators include many of the masters of bandes dessinées:

Edmond Baudoin, Enki Bilal, Christian Binet, Christophe Blain, Blutch, Bonhomme, Brouk, Cabu, Daniel Casanave, Florence Cestac, Charb, Etienne Davodeau, Jacque Ferrandez, F’Murr, André Juillard, Kent, Krassinski, Anne Goetzinger, Jean-Pierre Hugot, Juanjo Guarnido, Emmanuel Guibert, Manu Larcenet, Léo (Brazilian artist who lives in France), Loup, Luz, Frank Margerin, Jean-Claude Mézières, Montellier, Jean-Claude, Morchoisne, Pancho, René Petillon, Piem, Puchol, Pascal Rabaté, Riad Sattouf, Siné, Jacques Tardi, Tignous, Didier Tronchet, Willem, Georges Wolinski and Olivier Wozniak.

Online, you can look through the catalogue and see the drawings that make up the auction. If you want to lend a hand in this worthwhile cause, feel free to send the details to all your friends (for those more fluent than we are the official French site is here).

This comes soon after the story of the ‘red tents’ protest by “les Enfants de Don Quichotte” which took the largely ignored problem of the homeless in Paris and pushed it onto the media agenda by getting hold of dozens of red tents and creating a high-profile camp for the homeless in Paris to shame the authorities into doing more (not the image the City of Light wants to project to her many visitors).

Don’t forget another example of comics for charity, worthy of your support – Adrian Brown’s Just1Page in England, which has raised funds for Childline and garned support from around the world (the fourth Just1Page has a football theme and had some 20 artists from Brazil take part along with many others) and has included such creators as Hunt Emerson, Lew Stringer and Mike Carey.
