From our Continental Correspondent – Plunk!

Hey Kids! Do you like strange creatures, in green with a funnel on their head? Then it’s time to check out the Plunkblog, the blog that Flemish creators Cromheecke and Letzer have created in honour of their creation, Plunk!

Plunk originally appeared as one of the main characters in Taco Zip, a very offbeat and surreal comic strip by Cromheecke and Letzer that ran in a number of Dutch and Belgian newspapers and also had a short run as a comic album. Taco Zip took Crazy Kat’s surreal atmosphere to a new level and was about absolutely nothing, except the adventures of a spaceman, a policeman and a talking tree. Needless to say, it was quite an underground success and its album run was mercilessly short.

Afterwards, Letzer and Cromheecke tried other projects with several publishers, until Plunk’s own career was launched by the comics weekly Spirou, where it fitted right in with their recent line of cute characters-with-an-edge. A first Plunk album (I Love Plunk) was recently selected, along with eight other books, for the very prestigious Grand Prix des Lecteurs du Journal de Mickey 2007, which will be awarded in October.

On the Plunkblog, Cromheecke mainly publishes zany doctored photos and comic samples, but also short notes on how he works and how a Plunk cartoon gets created. The blog is mainly in Dutch and occasionally in French, but luckily for you mono-linguists the comics themselves are completely without words, which brings them easily within your reach as well. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to build your very own Plunk Paper Toy, and check out the report on the newest artificial land project in Dubai. And buy I Love Plunk! It’s better than an acid trip, and much cheaper!

[...] Although the festival is aimed primarily at a Dutch-speaking audience, several other events will be of interest to foreign comics enthusiasts. Plunk, the strange alien creature that we blogged about earlier, will be present in a larger-than-life format, and will hide several miniature Plunk comics on the festival grounds. Ah, and Luc Cromheecke, Plunk’s creator, will be there as well. This is one of the most hilarious silent comics that I’ve seen recently, so don’t miss it. Next is a trio of American cartoonists, as the US is guest country for this festival. Scott McCloud, who, after his passage on the Frankfurter Buchmesse, will continue the European leg of his (almost never-ending) tour with his lecture on making comics on December 15th at 2 o’clock. Half an hour earlier, Peter Kuper, one of the founders of World War Three, illustrator for Time, Newsweek, The Village Voice and The New York Times and current genius in charge of ‘Spy vs. Spy’, will talk about his work. Finally, Kevin Huizinga represents the newer voices on the comics forum; he will be interviewed together with Kuper by yours truly on Sunday. [...]
