Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix picked up no less than three major awards at the first ITV National Movie Awards over the weekend, including Best Family Film, Best Male Performance for Daniel Radcliffe and Best Female Performance for Emma ‘Hermione’ Watson, who beat heavyweights like Judi Dench and Keira Knightley for the award. Also taking home gongs from the awards – picked out by popular public vote – were Casino Royale, which took the Best Action Movie award and also received a special recognition award for the long-running James Bond franchise (interesting to note two of the big winners – Potter and Bond – come from very popular novels); comics and SF fan Simon Pegg’s Hot Fuzz won Best Comedy while the Simpsons Movie took the Best Animation film gong (although to be honest I think it and the other nominees like Happy Feet and Shrek the Third were pretty poor compared to some recent good feature animations). In other Boy Wizard-related news, the rare complete set of Harry Potter hardbacks all signed by author J.K. Rowling which were going under the hammer for the charity Books Abroad, sold over the weekend for £18, 200 (considerably more than $30, 000 in US terms). The Edinburgh-based author, whose mother in law works for the charity, agreed to donate the signed collection to raise funds for Books Abroad which, according to the BBC article, has so far sent an astonishing two million free books to schools around the globe. The Harry Potter set is so valuable it has been held safe and sound in a police station in Aberdeenshire.
