Variety and a number of other sites are reporting that the Harry Potter films have now apparently taken the James Bond movies’ crown as the world’s top grossing film franchise ever. According to Warner Bros the boy wizard’s five flicks have now taken in some $4.7 billion worldwide, pipping the twenty-plus Bond movies which have raked in a paltry $4.4 billion, while Star Wars comes in at $4.23 billion – hardly worth getting out of bed for. Mind you, you can’t take the numbers at face values, especially since they don’t reflect inflation or changes in ticket prices over the decades – somehow I suspect Bond might have a better chance if the box office results were adjusted to modern values. Still, it does give an idea on just how much we spend on seeing our favourite films, doesn’t it? And that’s box office figures, not the extra we spend on merchandise, CD soundtracks, DVDs, visiting theme parks or Castles which double as Hogwarts. And just think, we have more Bond and Potter films to look forward to, so those figures are going to go up.

The new chart combines sales of books, DVDs, CDs and computer games into one rundown, although I find it very odd that a brand new multimedia chart doesn’t include downloads for music; this first one covers the amount of sales in the first six months of 2007. Bond’s Casino Royale easily trumped the opposition (naturally, I mean, he’s Bond obviously he’s going to win!), clearing the second place (The Queen DVD) by more than double the number of sales. [...]
