The winners of this years ICOM awards have been announced, rewarding German comics creators whose work is being published through smaller publishers or self-published. There are five main categories with the overall winner receiving 500 Euros and the other category winners 300 Euros – not a king’s ransom, but nice to see an award actually carrying a financial reward. The winner of overall best comic was Berlin based cartoonist Mawil (Markus Witzel) for his “Meister Lampe” book from Reprodukt the fourth time he has won the award since they began in 1994.

Best Kurzcomic (by short comic we think here they mean comic strip) saw first time winner Naomi Fearn win with her “Zucker Fisch” series. Robi (Rochus Hahn) also won for a fourth time as best script writer for his contribution to “Dipperz Nr. 3″, whilst Toni Greis picked up the best artist award (his work has appeared in the US in the Eros published Alraune). The fifth award was a special jury prize to “Die Zauberfloete” an adaptation of Mozart’s Opera in comics form from WOC and Karin Windofer. If you have good German there is coverage over at the Comic Radio Show site – including pictures and brief overviews of the winners. Mawil is our favourite German cartoonist – glad to see him win again and Lampe is terrific fun.
