The hand-written and hand-illustrated collection of fairy tales by JK Rowling, the Tales of Beedle the Bard, which I mentioned the other day has somewhat surpassed expectations at a charity auction. Sotheby’s had estimated earlier in the week it might go for up to fifty thousand pounds; in the event the only copy to be sold (the other six were gifts) went for a staggering two million pounds. The Author is said to be “stunned and ecstatic” at the enormous sum bid, with the proceeds of the sale going to support the charity Children’s Voice: “This will mean so much to children in desperate need of help. It means Christmas has come early to me.” You know, it might not be a very erudite observation, but all I can think to say is ‘wow’.
