Madame Tutli-Putli wins at Cannes

Pat Dillon-Moore from the National Film Board of Canada drops me a note to say how over the moon the NFB folks are as one of their animated films, Madame Tutli-Putli, picked up not one but two awards at the prestigious Cannes film festival. From the official press release: “Montreal, May 25, 2007 – It was announced in Cannes today that the National Film Board of Canada’s animated short Madame Tutli-Putli has won two awards at the 46th International Critics’ Week: the Canal + Award for Best Short Film and the Petit Rail d’Or for Best Short Film.

Madame Tutli-Putli is a stunning, stop-motion animated film that takes the viewer on an exhilarating existential journey when Madame Tutli-Putli boards the night train, weighed down with all her earthly possessions and the ghosts of her past. The emotive film is avant-garde in its use of puppet animation, introducing groundbreaking visual techniques and a haunting, original score.

Madame Tutli-Putli is Montreal-based Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski’s first professional film and the pair were in France to accept the award. Marcy Page is producer and David Verrall the executive producer. Both have worked on numerous NFB productions, most recently Ryan and The Danish Poet.” (the Danish Poet won this year’s best aniamted short Oscar – Joe)

Congratulations to all concerned – the film will next be appearing at the Annency Animation Festival (June 11th to 16th) and have its North American premiere at the Worldwide Shorts Festival in Toronto (June 12th – 17th), before going on the international film festival circuit (again I cross my fingers it will turn up at the Edinburgh Film Fest – sadly it is so rare to get the chance to see these animated works in a cinema). There is an official site here where you can read more about the film, catch interviews with the creators and watch the trailer, which is quite short but gives a little teasing promise of some lovely animation.
