Meet Mira Furlan

The Dublin branch of FPI is very fortunate – they are going to get to play host to one of the great actresses of telefantasy, Mira Furlan. Mira has built herself a new following with her portrayal of Danielle Rousseau in the hit series Lost (first glimpsed as a lone, mad Frenchwoman hiding in the jungle), but many of we SF fans also remember her portrayal of Delenn on J M Straczynski’s groundbreaking Babylon 5 series where she appeared in all five seasons, moving from being an enigmatic alien character early on to being a large part of the emotional heart of the show.

I remember Straczynski, before his comics days, giving her a speech to deliver during a scene where civil war is tearing apart her home world; Mira is from Croatia and at the time the show was running the former Yugoslavia was ripping itself apart in reality; she invested the words Straczynski gave her with such an incredible level of emotion it brought a lump to my throat. Sometimes TV SF can be accused of silly plots, wooden dialogue and acting, but Mira’s performance has been one those of us who love the genre have always been able to hold up against the naysayers. Mira will be appearing at the Dublin FPI, 5 – 6 Crampton Quay, Dublin 2 (phone 0035 3167 10688) on the 15th of July from 3 to 5pm, so please do come down and meet one of the best actresses on telefantasy.
