The city of Hangzhou’s mascot, the monkey Lele, has lead a procession of cartoon characters for a grand opening pageant to open the Third China International Catoon and Animation Festival. The opening celebrations included what the CCTV site referred to as the cartoonist’s best friend, the cat (although cats usually work best in partnership with cartoon mice in my experience) with a tribute to China’s best known animation character Black Cat Sheriff (that was a new one on me too, so I’ve learned something this morning).
The festival, which runs from April 28th to May 4th has, as you would expect, a huge contingent from China and other Oriental countries such as Taiwan (good that the Chinese seem cool with that, given the history between China and Taiwan) and North Korea, as well as a wide international number of participants, including the French Animation Film Association and the producers of the Simpsons (is there a country that doesn’t like cartoons?.
