More comics and animation coverage on Resonance

Alex Fitch has kindly updated me with more upcoming shows on Resonance FM which will appeal especially to our readers, covering both comics and also kicking off I’m Ready For My Close-up’s season of programmes on animation:

Thursday 08/11/07 5pm – 6pm: Strip – Posy Simmonds @ ComICA

Continuing Resonance FM’s coverage of the London ComICA festival: In a conversation with Lisa Appignanesi, Posy Simmonds discusses and draws characters from her very fine new graphic novel Tamara Drewe, serialised in The Guardian and reworked into a book from Jonathan Cape.

Thursday 08/11/07 8pm – 9pm: Clear Spot – Achtung! Commando!; The Art of War Comics @ ComICA

Gung-ho but blood-free, the pocket-sized Commando has been winning the war for over 4,000 issues. Experts Steve Holland (whose excellent Bear Alley blog is always worth a visit) and David Roach consider the artistry and evolution of war comics with those who created them (come on, admit it, Commando Books are a guilty pleasure many of us have indulged in from time to time).

And since Steve Holland’s name has cropped up I should point out he has written up a post on some of the comics events at the ICA on the 4th. Steve has also posted up some pages from an old strip entitled “Captain Kidd, Buccaneer” (see below) which he is trying to identify. He thinks the strip may originally be from a US newspaper – the reprint he has dates from August 1955 but Steve suspects the original publication was a good bit earlier. If anyone can help him identify the strip or the artist then leave him a message on Bear Alley.

Thursday 08/11/07 10.30pm – 11pm: I’m ready for my close-up – Designing great cartoon characters

Starting IMFRCU’s month long look at animation, Alex Fitch talks to former Disney animator and director Vincent Woodcock (Ducktails: Secret of the Lost Lamp, The Tigger Movie) about designing great cartoon characters.

A reminder that although the regular shows should also appear as podcasts on Alex’s blog after transmission the Comica events can’t be redone this way at the moment, so you will need to catch them during the actual broadcast. And not comics, but tonight is Resonance FM & Electric Sheep Magazine’s monthly film night at The Roxy Bar & Screen in Borough High Street and it is a flick by a cult Asian director I know a lot of our readers will be big fans of: Miike Takashi. “The Happiness of the Katakuris” which will be introduced and followed by a Q & A with Richard Thomas & Virginie Selavy. From 7.30pm
