It’s been a busy weekend for the German comics industry, yesterday we gave you the ICOM award winners and now here are the prize winners from the Munich Comic Festival which was held this past weekend (June 7-10).
(Reinhard Kleist poses with his award)
The main 2007 Peng! prizewinners were Reinhard Kleist in the best German comic category for his biocomic of Johnny Cash – “Cash – I see a Darkness” – supposedly on its way from Dark Horse, possibly very late ’07 but more likely early ’08 (2nd Fil for “Didi and Stulle” and 3rd Isabel Kreitz for Der 35. Mai). Best US comic was a repeat win for Craig Thompson (he won in 2005 – this is a bi-annual festival) for his diary/comic book “Carnet de Voyage” (2nd was Robert Kirkman for “The Walking Dead” and 3rd Darwyn Cooke for “New Horizons”. Best European comics went to Monster Allergy by the Italian team of Alessandro Barbucci and Barbara Canepa, best reprint project went to the German versions of Fantagraphics “The Complete Peanuts”. All qualifying books had to be in a German language edition.
(Fils in a Native American costume – no, we don’t know why either – was it a Pocahontas tribute? But it was apparently one of the highlights of the show)
You can read a complete breakdown of the awards here and there is a photo report on the event here (just keep hitting ‘naechste seite’ at bottom right to advance the pages – text in German) where you can see loads of the Peng! and ICOM award winners including Mawil, Kleist and Toni Greis as well as cartoonist Fil engaged in one of the shows reputed higlights a music performance dressed in full American Indian dress – now when is that coming to San Diego.

(Above: screen capture of one dude licking another at the Comicfestival München. Yeah, sure, there was more comic-related footage available in the video, but I’m running with this instead. Ooooh, baby…) [...]
