New Sudden Interviews

Paulo Patrício at Mundo Fantasma has posted up a batch of recent Sudden Interviews (again in two languages, once more shaming me for my poor foreign language writing skills, or lack thereof) to tide readers over until the series returns in September . One of those artists featured is Mark Newgarden, who will also be at the Edinburgh International Film Festival this month with Lost and Found: From the Collection of Mark Newgarden on Thursday 23rd of August at 9.15pm in the Filmhouse. The evening will be “a unique screening event, with selections from cult NY cartoonist Mark Newgarden’s eclectic collection of lost footage, found footage, silent animation and toy films” and is being held in conjunction with the folks from Edinburgh’s very fine Collective Gallery. Full details are available from the Film Festival site.

The Newgarden film event is just one part of the Comic Book Project which the Collective Gallery is running and other events will take place, some in cooperation with the other festivals running in the city in August, such as the Book Festival (if you don’t know the city, Edinburgh is Festival Planet in August, it’s crazy, exciting and annoying in varying proportions). There is an exhibition at the Collective on Cockburn Street (running until the 15th of September) and a number of related events exploring “the relationship of performative practice within visual art, theatre and comedy.” As ever, check the official site for more details. I do like the idea of letting loose comics into the wider artistic community; who knows, perhaps it may even lure in some curious new readers. Regardless, it is nice to see the medium being given such coverage with other artists outside the genre.

[...] Elsewhere in the Festival this month we have comics and SF-related performances such as Stardust at the Film Festival (yes, I am going and yes, I will tell you what it is like) and Day Watch, the sequel to the surprise international fantasy movie from Russia, Night Watch, as well as some interesting animation to look forward to in the programme and the Mark Newgarden crossover event with the Collective Gallery I blogged the other day, while, as I have mentioned here a few times now, the Book Festival will be running some graphic novel events for the first time.     Print this Story    Send to a Friend [...]
