Nostalgia & Comics marathon at Fictions

Comics and cartoons

Richard Bruton has been pretty busy over the holiday weekend, posting several new parts to his Nostalgia & Comics recollections (I blame all the sugary chocolate eggs for over-stimulting him) on his Fictions blog. It is a real marathon session, taking in a post on some of the staff Richard worked with, then into a series heavily illustrated with photos which will bring back memories for some and no doubt scare the bejesus out of others when they see how they used to look and dress back in the day. Part 1 of the photo series has some pics from the Birmingham Comics Art Show in the 80s, taking in such luminaries as Art Adams, Brian Bolland, Hunt Emerson, Charles Vess and Bryan Talbot among others.

(one of the pics from Richard’s second photo post, showing Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman – I’ve never seen Neil in a tie! – and Dave Gibbons, probably late 80s at a convention in London)

In the second part we are treated to the (above) sight of Dave Gibbons, Alan Moore and a young man with the gleam of a Sandman in his eyes (or is it just the shades?) Neil Gaiman at a London con, Alan Moore about to cut into a DC 50th birthday cake with a very large knife, which, as Richard notes wryly, seems to take on more connotations given Alan’s final falling out with DC. Part 3 of the set gives us Dave Sim and Gerhard in their full 1980s, Miami Vice-era glory – just dig those rolled-up sleeves (I empathise, everyone has fashion disasters in their wardrobe and even I tinkered with this look back then – hey, don’t look at me like that, it was very chic then).

To wrap things up there is a fourth photo set focussing more on the shop, including the famous Progaganda shelves (now living on in virtual form in Richard’s regular Propaganda reviews here) before Richard decides to call a halt to the series, but like General MacArthur he may return with more in the future; meantime there are always new Propaganda reviews to look forward to.
