Oscar time

Tinsel Town’s annual red carpet fashion catwalk (the movies are secondary to fashion these days for some, it seems) has been and gone for another year. Guillermo Del Toro’s brilliant Pan’s Labyrinth was up in a number of major categories, including Best Original Screenplay (very unusual for a non English language film) but lost out, although it did pick up the coveted little golden statues for Best Cinematography, Best Make-up and Best Art Direction (one of the things I loved about the film was it combined astonishing visual richness and creativity to go along with a proper, engrossing story, not in place of it). Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest won for Best Use of a Bandana in a Major Motion Picture (okay, it was Visual Effects, really, beating out Superman Returns).

Best Animated Feature went to Happy Feet (dancing penguins and Queen songs, what more do you need?) while the Best Animated Short Film award went to The Danish Poet by Torill Kove (her second Oscar visit as she was nominated for My Grandmother Ironed the King’s Shirts in 1999). The Danish Poet is narrated by Liv Ullman and follows Kaspar, a poet suffering from writer’s block who has gone on holiday to Norway to meet the famous writer Sigrid Undset. The animation is quite lovely, putting me in mind of a cross between a children’s picture book and Metaphrog’s Louis comics; this site has more details, pictures and a clip you can watch (thanks to Lise Fearnley of Mikrofilm for the link). Full details of all the night’s winners can be found on the official Oscar site. And nothing to do with comics or SF, but Marty Scorcese winning Best Director at last – about damned time!
