BBC Radio 7 is airing an 18-part adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ Perelandra, which started on Monday (use the Listen Again feature to hear it for up to seven days after transmission) and continues weekdays at 6pm. Lewis’ science fiction shows its age in depicting a Venus which is inhabited by human-like beings (as many writers of the period also did, notably Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs) and the heavy use of Christian allegory throughout may put off some readers and listeners (personally I always felt I was being rather preached at, which I don’t want a novel to do) although there is some enjoyable SF adventure in there too.
