Political cartoons auctioned for charity

Luckner’s, the the London-based internet auction house, is holding an ongoing auction of political cartoons to raise funds for the charity CARE International, which campaigns to end poverty around the globe. There is a range of cartoons on offer, ranging from (estimated) prices of around £20 to several hundred, so for once it looks like most of us can bid on something instead of looking at the art and thinking how much we’d like to buy it if only we had £800 down the back of the sofa. But I’ll comfort myself by thinking the higher the bid the more money is going to help someone who needs it (although I still want that cartoon, dammit!).

There’s an impressive array of some top-notch cartooning talent represented at the auction, including Ralph Steadman (one of my all time favourites), Nicholas Garland and Peter Schrank among others. The auction began yesterday and runs until the 1st of November – to view items and place a bid swing by Luckner’s site and register, or if you are in London you can also visit their showroom (again check their site for details). I know full well anything I fancy I will swiftly find myself being outbid on, but I think I’ll have to have a longer look and maybe a go this weekend (I’ve already seen several I’d be happy to own even with just a quick glance at the list) – not often you get a chance to bid on work by cartoonists of this calibre and do some good too. Spread the word. (link via the London SE1 community site)
