The New York Times has a look at one of the upcoming fantasy-based shows due to debut this autumn on Stateside TV which we mentioned here recently, Pushing Daisies. The show, which centres around a man who can bring the dead back to life with a touch, but can’t touch them a second time or they die for good, seems to be generating quite a buzz and even leading to a bidding war between networks eager to make it (compare that eagerness to the reluctance to greenlight new SF&F shows a few years back, my how things have changed), with ABC winning the bid. Apparently the influence of the film Amelie in some of the work influenced their decision, which is a hopeful sign, I think, since that had to be one of the loveliest movies of the last decade. Mind you since the creator, Bryan Fuller, had an initial positive network reaction to his previous fantasy show Wonderfalls only to see it later dropped (he thinks the gay characters probably didn’t work for some) he is trying not to get too excited at all of this attention. Interesting concept and one worth keeping an eye on.
