Harry Potter creator J K Rowling is to be officially honoured by Edinburgh, the city where she wrote most of the original work. At present the only real public sign of her city connection is a plaque on Nicolson Street on the Southside which commemorates her writing part of the first novel in the nearby cafe; now city councillors are discussing a more formal way to honour the bestselling, Edinburgh based writer, possibly by naming a street after her (an unusual event for a living person) and perhaps establishing a young writer’s competition in her name (which would be far more appropriate, I feel, especially since Rowling herself benefited from an award from the Scottish Arts Council which allowed her to complete writing that first book).
