On the UKSF Book News Sandy reports on an initiative by the Moseley Statue Group in Birmingham who are trying to raise funds through a public subscription to create a statue to celebrate the life of J R R Tolkien who lived in Moseley Village. The plan is to erect a twenty foot high statue of an Ent, designed by Tim Tolkien, grandson of J R R Tolkien’s younger brother Hilary, with subscribers able to bid via Ebay for a metal ‘leaves’ to go with the statue of the tree herder, with each leaf being inscribed by Tim with words from the subscriber, meaning fans have a chance to support a piece of public art and also to have their own name on a landmark on Birmingham’s Tolkien Trail. The Ebay auction will commence on October 1st and runs for six weeks, with some special larger leaves also available for corporate sponsors.

This isn’t really the place to rehearse the arguments over the statue, but as a Moseley resident, I’d appreciate it if you didn’t bid.
