The Chicago Tribune carries an article (which looks to have originated in the LA Times) by Elizabeth Mehren on the Center for Cartoon Studies and co-founder James Sturm (creator of The Golem’s Mighty Swing) in White River Junction, Vermont. Its a brief but interesting article for both the comics reader and the would-be comics creator: “Sturm, 41, describes CCS as both a cartoonist’s boot camp and a think tank for graphic novelists. He argues that cartoons offer a unique synthesis of fine art and popular culture, and afford an arena for biography, fiction and dreams.” Visiting lecturers have included Art Spiegelman and Bill Griffiths among others, while Charles Schulz’s widow has been a solid supporter of the whole idea of the CCS.
