This isn’t comics, but it is such a damned cool bit of art that I can’t resist blogging it – normally most of us would be outraged if anyone were to graffiti on an ancient, historic building, but here in Bonnie Scotland the local laird of Kelburn Castle, 35 miles west of Glasgow, has actually invited top Brazilian graffiti artists the Sao Paulo Crew to paint over the outer walls of this fine piece of historic Scottish architecture.
Why? Well, the outer walls were covered with a rendering several decades ago, which is actually proving detrimental to the proper stonework beneath and so it is going to be removed in a couple of years time – in the meantime a month-long project is underway to allow the artists a most unusual canvas of a Scottish castle to create a colourful work on (despite the usual Scottish weather raining off some days!). The official site has pictures of their progress and some fantastic time-lapse videos of the artists working on the castle walls. Since castles represent the Established Order Of Things it is fascinating to see the owners embracing such a street form of art that is normally looked down on at best, prosecuted as criminal at worst (unless you are Banksy and can sell it for a lot of money). Doesn’t this just put a huge smile on your face?
