Ned Beauman in the Guardian’s book blog has a look at the large amount of discussion recently among comics fans regarding the way female characters are portrayed. Interestingly Ned doesn’t seem to be just picking up the topic as a bit of filler for a column, he admits right at the start that he likes the genre, but, like many of us who do, he is often less than happy with the way it portrays some female characters. If you haven’t been following the back and forth discussions on many sites recently the piece has plenty of links which will bring you quickly up to speed. And it isn’t all negative – Ned singles out some creators like Joss Whedon and Brian K Vaughan for their good use of superheroines. The article also promises more entries on the Guardian book blog dealing with comics and graphic novels, which is good to know.
