The road to Wigan Pier

The Turnpike Gallery in Wigan will be hosting an exhibition of fantasy-tinged artwork by the influential British artist David Hockney, with works inspired by the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. From the gallery’s description: “In this exhibition of etchings illustrating the 6 fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm, David Hockney has given each fairy tale his own interpretation. Rather than illustrating the stories literally, he has chosen vivid images to encapsulate a mood or detail. Drawn from centuries of folklore, some of the tales are familiar, like Rapunzel and Rumpelstilzchen; others, such as Old Rinkrank, Fundevogel and The Little Sea Hare are little known.”

The exhibition, part of the Hayward touring series, consists of thirty nine etchings created by Hockney in 1969, inspired by the fairy tales. The exhibition runs at the Tunrpike from December 1st to January 5th; check the gallery site for more details. (thanks to Ariel at the UKSF Book News for the link)
