Scarlett Johansson is set to return to the world of comics to movie adaptations several years after her early break-out role in Ghost World as the Hollywood Reporter announces that she has been signed on to appear in Frank Miller’s film version of the late, great Will Eisner’s The Spirit. It probably won’t surprise folks to learn the voluptous Scarlett will be taking on the role of one of Eisner’s beloved femme fatales, in this case Silk N. Floss, an accomplice to the Octopus (played by Samuel L Jackson). The alluring, gorgeous but deadly femme fatale is a staple of the Noir genre and Eisner also enjoyed having these seductive but destructive women in his comics. I can see Scarlett being pretty much perfect for this kind of role since she has not only the figure but the sort of glamour associated with 40s and 50s Hollywood which is quite appropriate for this kind of role, in much the same way as Kim Basinger had that perfect quality for LA Confidential. And it gives me a good excuse to post a pic of Scarlett dressed to kill (and thrill) which illustrates just how she can put on that old-fashioned glamour.

Silk N. Floss – is there such a character in the Spirit? Didn’t hit me over the head with familarity.

I’m pretty sure you’ve read much more of The Spirit than I have – I didn’t recognise the name myself, but assumed it was in one of the volumes I haven’t read yet, but if you haven’t heard of her then perhaps they’ve just made her up for the film version. Which seems odd since I don’t think there is a lack of potential femme fatales in the original works.
