Comics and cartoons

Thrillpowered Thursday is a series of Live Journal posts by Hipster Dad, who is working through his collection of 2000AD and Judge Dredd Megazine issues, one issue an evening, then posting weekly thoughts on them – he’s now reached December 1994 and Mean Angel in a nun’s habit (it’s worth looking just for that!), an episode also noticeable for the contribution of Carl Critchlow of Thrud the Barbarian fame. This looks like being worthwhile bookmarking to read alongside Paul Rainey’s 2000AD Prog Slog Blog where he too is going through classic issues of the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic.

In one of his most recent entries Paul comments on re-reading the comics adaptation in 2000AD of Harry Harrison’s immortal SF super-criminal Slippery Jim DiGriz, aka The Stainless Steel Rat. I’ve fond memories of these adaptations myself (with artwork by one of my lifelong favourites, Carlos Ezquerra); they prompted me to seek out Harry’s original novels and I’ve been reading him ever since. I love Paul’s comments on Carlos’ artwork: “For me, Ezquerra’s art is the big sell. Slippery Jim diGriz looks like a late seventies porn star or the actor that just missed getting the lead in Space 1999. Angelina looks like one hell of a sexy bad girl. In fact, if she were my girlfriend, I would happily overlook the occasional mass murder, just as long as she didn’t do it too often.”
