Tonight on Resonance

Alex Fitch kindly updates us on what aural delights we can look forward to on this evening’s broadcast of Strip! on Resonance FM (beginning at 5pm):

The first half of today’s show is continuing Resonance FM’s coverage of the London ComICA festival – the second half of a discussion held at the Comica festival in which Lisa Appignanesi talks to Guardian cartoonist in residence Posy Simmonds about the collection of her strips from the newspaper which has just been published as a hardback graphic novel Tamara Drewe by Jonathan Cape. The talk was recorded live at the ICA last month. Please note: this discussion will not be podcast, so please tune in if you want to catch it.

In the second half of the show you’ll hear an interview that Duncan Nott and Alex Fitch conducted at the Birmingham International Comics Show with British novelist and comics writer – Simon Spurrier – about his work, from acclaimed strips in 2000AD and Judge Dredd megazine such as Lobster Random and The Simping Detective to his recent forays into the American market with Gutsville and Silver Surfer: In thy name.”

It all sounds good to me – Tamara Drewe is quite an interesting book, parts of it using traditional comics panels, other segments more like a text work with an illustration, but it all works and this approach has the benefit of making it very accessible to those who aren’t regular comics readers. And I’m sure anyone who knows their Brit comics will be interested in tuning into hear Simon Spurrier’s Q&A; he often displays a great, left-field take on situations which gives his tales a more unique and unusual feel to them – Rebellion’s recent collection of his Simping Detective is an incredibly enjoyable skewed look at the underside of Dredd’s Mega City One with some brilliant Noir touches.

Alex also tells me he has put up a podcast of his interview with Charlie Adlard now after struggling with a reluctant PC – you can find it on his blog, although now he has left “I’m Ready for my Close-up” show he has started a new Panel Borders blog instead and the I’m Ready blog will cease at the end of the year, so adjust your bookmarks accordingly. Alex is also now involved with Sci-Fi London and will have audio interviews with Matthew Graham and Philip Glenister about Life on Mars/Ashes to ashes, as well as Alan Shubrook about Thunderbirds coming up on there shortly, so another one to bookmark.
