Watchmen movie site

Warner Brothers has an official movie site up for the Watchmen movie, proclaiming a launch date of “03.06.09″ (I’d assume that is in the US date-style and actually means the 6th of March 2009). Unsurprisingly there isn’t much on the site at this point, except a brief synopsis and a cast list which is just that, a list (no pictures yet, not even a simple headshot of the actors). Still, it would seem to indicate that unlike many previous attempts where scripts were drafted and directors had a run a the material only to drop it and shelf everything, this time the studio is determined that Zack ‘300′ Synder’s version will actually be made. Like most who admire Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ groundbreaking original I have mixed feelings about this prospect – part of me really wants to see it as a film (although I still maintain a mini-series on TV would suit the material better) but another part is worried about how it well it will stand in relation to the source material. Then again, I was equally worried about V For Vendetta and the movie version of that worked extremely well, I thought, managing to update it for a modern audience while maintaining the themes and feel of the original book.

One thing the new Watchmen site doesn’t address though is probably the most burning question on all our minds – will they let Doc Manhattan walk around naked? Will we be treated to the site of a big, blue willy on a 70MM print on the big screen dangling free or will they make Billy Crudup who is playing Jon Osterman/Doc Manhattan wear a costume? I vote for the let it all hang out option in the interests of authenticity and also because I really want to see Germaine Greer analysing the cultural significance of blue superhero willies on Late Review when the film comes out.
