What’s in a name?

Books

The Australian Daily Telegraph covers a book by Robert Schnakenberg who has compiled a new baby name book; there are plenty of baby name books out there for parents-to-be, from straightforward collections to specific ones such as Gaelic names, but this one is a little different since it lists a selection of names with science fiction links for those determined to bring up their little ones in the geek faith. Stuck for a name for your new lifeform? What about Ming? One way to ensure your kids grow up hating their parents! Still, no worse than those folks who insist on naming their children after all the names of the players in their favourite football team or celebs who dream up increasingly stupid names (sorry, ‘imaginative’ names) to saddle their offspring with. I wonder if anyone has called their child ‘Han’ yet?

I seem to recall reading that Mike Allred, creator of Madman, has indeed named his son ‘Han’.

All very silly and all that, but I’m not entirely sure the author can claim Lara & Alice as Sci-Fi names. I may be mistaken but I believe they’ve been around for a little while longer?

My favourite silly name, albeit not from the realms of sci-fi – from Molly’s nursery back in Birmingham. A lovely little girl called Tequila.
