Grady Hendrix from the New York Asian Film Festival (which the New York FP store is a good supporter of) drops me a line about a previously unreleased Takashi Miike (Audition, DOA, Ichi the Killer and many more) film they have coming up as part of this year’s festival. Zebraman looks like an utterly bonkers superhero flick from Miike, where a schoolteacher’s one bright spot in his life is his obsessive love for an obscure 70s TV show Zebraman. As aliens attack he finds himself actually gaining superpowers and turning into his cheesy hero in an OTT (well, it is Miike!) homage to fandom. Unusual for a Miike film this hasn’t been released properly, despite dating from 2004 so the festival (which runs until July 8th) might be your best bet to catch it. The film is screening on Saturday 30th June and Wednesday July 4th – check the official festival site for full details. I would so go and see this if it were on here.

(the mighty Zebraman in action!)
