“I haven’t seen a villain like this, or a bad guy like this, since Dennis Hopper played Frank Booth in Blue Velvet – this out-scares Hannibal Lecter,” Gary Oldman on the late Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight. Fellow star Sir Michael Caine also paid tribute to Ledger; the rumour mill in Tinsel Town is already talking about Ledger receiving a posthumous Oscar nomination for the role, something Caine said he could see happening, adding “he has my vote anyway.” While not in any way wishing to detract from his performance I can’t help but wonder if these whisperings of Oscar have more to do with Ledger’s tragic and far too young death, since it isn’t overly common for comic book movies to get Oscar noms in the acting category, not being the usual type of fare the Academy fancies for those.
