Between the Panels

Paul Gravett tells us that Sunday the 16th of November is a day to circle in your comics diary if you are in London. Between the Panels 3 will take place at 4pm with Hannah Berry, Paul Duffield, Oliver East and Marcia Williams discussing how  you actually make a graphic story. The event will conclude with the announcement of the second Observer/Jonathan Cape/Comica Graphic Short Story competition (which I have to say I am really delighted to see happening again, kudos to all involved in that).

Earlier on the same day the brilliant Dave McKean will be appearing in conversation with Andrzej Klimowski (who created the Faber-published and extremely unusual The Secret graphic novel a few years back), discussing his comics work, his book illustrations for Neil Gaiman, David Almond and Heston Blumenthal and his next solo comics project. I caught some of the art from these at Dave’s multimedia presentation at the Edinburgh Book Festival back in August (see here) and it was a real pleasure. On a related note I should point out to you that over on our webstore we’re delighted to offer some of Dave’s art books, some of which are often quite hard to track down, so go and enjoy a browse.

At 6pm the Turning Classics Into Comics event takes place with Richard Appignanesi, Ian Edgington, Mustashrik, Chie Kutsuwada, Ian Culbard, Jason Cobley, John M. Burns and Mike Collins talking about adapting classic literature from Shakespeare to Bronte and Dickens for the graphic novel medium. All these events are in the Nash Room at the ICA; for more details or to book tickets check the ICA site and for more on Comica check Paul’s site here.
