Bond Lotus sold

Film, TV and radio

One of the Lotus Esprits driven by James Bond in the 1970s has sold at auction in London for £111, 500 (ironically at a time when expensive sports car sales and values are suffering in the recession). The Lotus is the one which famously converted into a submarine in The Spy Who Loved Me – even in the 70s over-the-top period of superspy gadgets that infested Bond that was something else. Mad, but brilliant. (Who else had the toy version in the 70s and how quickly did you lose the missiles?) The car has gone to a phone buyer in Atlanta, Georgia. The registration plate AU1, which was used as the number plate on Goldfinger’s car, was also on sale at the same auction but failed to reach its reserve price. (via the BBC)
