Marketwire reports that the Constellation Awards, an annual Canadian awards which honours the best in science fiction and fantasy television and film, has posted up this year’s nominees, with our beloved Doctor Who (which is a British-Canadian co-production) scooping up no less than six nominations, including David Tennant in the Best Male Performance category (where interestingly he is competing against former Doctor Christopher Eccleston, nominated for his role in Heroes) and Best TV show (up against the likes of Battlestar Galactica).

(David Tennant in the Doctor Who story Human Nature/The Family of Blood, scripted by Paul Cornell, (c) BBC)
Doctor Who also picked up multiple nominations in the Best Overall 2007 Science Fiction Film or Television Script category (now as Jinx said to Bond “that’s a mouthful”). It won’t surprise many that from the last season of Who Steven Moffat‘s superlatively creepy Blink got a nomination and so did one of my other favourite writers, Paul Cornell, for the brilliantly emotional Human Nature/Family of Blood two-parter. I thought those particular stories were absolute stand-out episodes from the last season and I know a lot of you did too.

Torchwood has also made a showing in the nominations this year (another Canadian/BBC co-production) with nods in the Outstanding Canadian Contribution to Science Fiction Film or Television in 2007 category and Naoko Mori also got a nod for Best Female Performance for her role of Tosh. Organised by the TCon promotional society the Constellations will be announced at Polaris over the weekend of July 11th to 13th; closing date for those eligible to vote is June 15th; the full list of nominees can be found here.
