The BBC website reports on a talk incoming Doctor Who big cheese Steven Moffat gave at last weekend’s Comic-Con in San Diego, where he affirmed that there would be more new monsters when he takes over and that there wouldn’t be so many appearances from old characters: “We’re not in the business of being nostalgic, we’re making nostalgia for the future, new monsters, new friends. Doctor Who is at its best when it’s brand new and you’ve always got to remember that there’s a new bunch of eight-year-olds watching every year and it has to be original – it has to belong to them.”
Steve also answered some questions where people were concerned that, with his reputation for writing some of the creepier stories for the show, such as Blink, Doctor Who might become scarier under his watch – his reply was nice and simple: “if that’s your concern then… tough.” Quite right too – if it does get scarier all seasoned Who fans know full well that’s simply a cue to watch from behind the sofa in the time-honoured tradition. It doesn’t do kids any harm – the Stones of Blood scared the heck out of me as a kid (despite being so obviously fake) but now I count several standing stones among my circle of friends. Standing stones, circle – no? Oh well, suit yourselves!
