The 2008 Doug Wright Awards for Canadian Cartooning were announced recently, as Top Shelf‘s Chris Staros reminded me while he was dancing with delight over TS artist Jeff Lemire winning the Best Emerging Talent award for the first two volumes of his intriguing Essex County graphic novels (the third volume is due later this year), capping what’s been a bumper run for Jeff who has also seen his work nominated for the Eisners, Ignatz, the ALA’s Alex award and won the Joe Shuster award for Outstanding Canadian Comic Book Cartoonist.
Ann Marie Fleming won the Best Book category for The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam and the inaugral Pigskin Peters Award (what a brilliant name!) went to Julie Morstad for Milk Teeth. Lynn Johnston was inducted into the Giants of the North, the Canadian cartoonist’s hall of fame and not actually an association of enormously tall artists.
