Mike Conroy has been in touch to say that the full official list of winners for the Eagle Awards, announced at the Bristol comics bash at the weekend, should be going up shortly (in fact, hopefully tomorrow). There’s been a bit of a re-organisation behind the scenes of the awards, with Mike not being able to dedicate as much time to it as before due to his own work and the fact that both the Eagles and the Bristol Expo seem to grow bigger each year, although he said that the exhibitors he spoke to seemed to think they still hadn’t lost the fannish roots. Likewise retailers he spoke to there all seem to have had a very worthwhile time amidst the heaving crowds (in fact Mike mentioned that the doors had to be closed for two brief periods because so many visitors came in they were pushing the maximum amount of bodies allowed in the main exhibition space! Now that’s quite a turnout!). Mike’s daughter Cassandra will be taking on much more of a role with the Eagles and hopefully we should hear an official list of this year’s winners shortly.

First thought on that one:
There’s something mildly disturbing about this. In the modern age that we’re in, when people are live blogging and live twittering the results of the Eisners and other news from the NY Comic Con and San Diego, the Eagle Awards are going to be announced on the 3rd day after the event?
Someone should have been ready with a post to go – hell, all it needs is a list of the nominees that you’ve posted previously and then add a big WINNER next to one entry per category.
So far, all I’ve seen is D’Israeli winning Fave Comic Artist Inks.

And CBR get the award for first out of the box on this one:

“While CBR was robbed in the Favourite Website category, with Marvel.com winning the prize (not undeservedly, in light of their Digital Comics scheme), “Absolute Sandman” received the Favourite Reprint Eagle, and Dave Gibbons received Favourite Letterer, seeing him comment, “After 30 years, someone has finally recognized that I can spell.”
“The Walking Dead” once again won Favourite Black and White Comic, though the biggest cheer for this category was directed towards the critically acclaimed “Phonogram” by local creators Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie, leaving no doubt where the convention-goers favours lay. Perhaps the most surprising moment of the awards was seeing “Hellboy: Darkness Calls” beat back such industry titans as “All-Star Superman,” “Y the Last Man” and “Captain America” to win Favourite Colour Comic (US). Relative newcomer Matt Fraction won Favourite Writer, vindicating Marvel’s recent confidence in him with such high profile assinments as “Uncanny X-Men” and “Invincible Iron Man.”

Just like everything else about the Eagles, they way they announce the results is going to be slow, antiquated, and out of touch with what is happening in the industry.
Hopefully Mike leaving the awards in the hands of a 16 year old girl will make them more relevant.
