Empire, the UK’s largest movie magazine, has the final shortlist up for their annual awards. While plenty of magazines give out annual awards the Empire ones are pretty professional – readers vote in the categories and there is a proper awards ceremony which often attracts some very famous faces. In addition to categories like best film, best actor and so on Empire also pays attention to some of our favourite genres (generally ignored by other movie awards, although I suppose they can’t break down awards for every single genre), so we get a Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy category (which has Sunshine, Stardust, Transformers, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and 300 in the running) and Best Horror (which has 30 Days of Night, 28 Weeks Later, Saw IV, Death Proof and 1408 on the shortlist).
Genre flicks make appearances in other categories, reflecting the popular nature of the vote, so Harry Potter crops up again in the Best Film and Best Soundtrack nominations and Sunshine in the Best British Film category. Harry Potter star Emma Watson is nominated in the Best Actress category while her co-star Daniel Radcliffe, taking time off from appearing naked on stage, is nominated in the Best Actor category, as is Gerard Butler (for 300) and Simon Pegg (for Hot Fuzz, which I know isn’t SF, but we like Simon Pegg and he always sticks lots of genre references into everything and is obviously a fellow geek). Transformers star Shia laBeouf and St Trinian’s star (and now future Bond girl) Gemma Arterton are nominated in the Best newcomer category. Comedian and actor Rob Brydon will host the awards ceremony in London on March 9th.
