The details for any artists interested in trying their luck with this year’s European Cartoon Contest, organised with the Portugeuse Printing Press Museum, are now available as a PDF. Apparently this year is European Year of Intercultural Dialogue (well we’ve had some good European comics stories via Wim, so I suppose we’ve accidentally taken part in that!) and so that’s been selected as the theme for any entries – from the official rules: “It is in line with these purposes that Portugal launches a European Cartoon Contest, relying on the importance of the language of humour as a way to raise awareness of intercultural dialogue.”
Hmmm, I love playing with language for comedic effect, but I would have thought that was pretty culture-dependent – even humour in one English-language country won’t necessarily work in another (a joke I made about presidential hopeful McCain being heir to the frozen chip empire meant nothing to an American friend, for example), so I wonder how that will work across different languages? I thought one of the great things about cartoons is that being primarily visual they are much better at crossing language and cultural divides – be interesting to see how this works.
