(Scene from the short animated Superman by Chris Appelhans’ Froghat Studios)
I’m indebted to Kenny for pointing me towards this lovely little Superman animation from Chris Appelhans’ Froghat Studios. Its a charming short, using fairly simple animation set to music (including some nice visual-audio cues, such as speech bubbles appearing in time to the lyrics, a lovely touch) and the art style, to my eyes at least, shows influences from some good sources, like Sylvain Chomet (Belleville Rendezvous), Scarfe and perhaps a touch of Bill Plympton. The rest of Chris’ online portfolio has some lovely art to take in, including work for Monster House and an Alice in Wonderland adaptation which looks quite beautiful.

Its a lovely site which you should go and have a look at, although sadly it doesn’t have a lot of biographical information on the artist. I did a little online digging and found that Charley Parker (not to be confused with Charlie Parker, the legendary jazz musician) on the Lines and Colors site had the same problem a while back, coming across some of Chris’ work, finding his site but not much information on the artist himself. Fortunately for us Charley did some looking around and found that Chris Appelhans has been a contributor to the highly acclaimed Flight comics anthologies as well as developing art designs for the animated feature Monster House and running an online comic strip Frank and Frank. Go and have a look around his site, enjoy the art and watch the Superman animation, it will put a smile on your face.
