I am way behind on my news sources, and this tidbit may already have gone a bit stale. For that I’m sorry, but I think it’s important enough to mention again for any of you who may have missed it as well:
Marjane Satrapi, creator of the award-winning graphic novels Persepolis and Embroideries, has been awarded the title of doctor honoris causa by the Belgian Catholic universities of Leuven and Louvain-La-Neuve. Together with three other luminaries, Italian Jesuit Paolo Dall’Oglio, American law professor Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na’im and Sari Nusseibeh, rector of the Al-Quds University in Jerusalem, Satrapi was elected for the important role she has played and still plays in bringing different cultures closer together.
As Didier Pasamonik perhaps a bit hyperbolically stated on Actua BD earlier, this initiative has a special symbolic aspect. In1968, the two Belgian Catholic universities were split in a Dutch-speaking part and a French-speaking part, with the two acting as competitors more often than not. The award ceremonies will take place on February 2nd, 2009. You can expect a full, and more timely, report as it happens.
