A new, definitive edition of Yves Chaland’s Coeurs d’aciers was published last week by Belgian publisher Champaka. Coeurs d’aciers is the long lost Spirou Et Fantasio adventure that Atom Style virtuoso Chaland created in 1990, and which took Spirou back to the glory days of the Belgian comic strip in the 1950s. It was the last book by Chaland that was published during his lifetime, in a very limited edition of 1350 signed and numbered copies. In that edition, the strips were published in a two-tone colour scheme, but for the new edition, the original artwork has been recoloured by Isabelle Beaumenay-Joannet, and the book only costs 16 Euros.

Champaka’s books are never complete without something extra, and this book is no exception: to top it off, a colour version has been added of Chaland’s sériegraphie Le Collectionneur, and this is a real treat for every eurocomics afficcionado. Originally published in black-and-white by Les Editions Rombaldi, this illustration pictures a comics collector surrounded by memorabilia of the great Franco-Belgian series of the 50’s and 60’s. On the low res version of the illustration shown above (and nicked from Blake, Jacobs And Mortimer), can you name all the references Chaland makes ?
