The Harvey Awards were given out at the weekend’s Baltimore Comic-Con, where Brian Michael Bendis gave the keynote speech. All Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely did well. picking up no less than three Harveys, which isn’t overly surprising – the series featured pretty frequently in a number of contributor’s Best of the Year lists on here last winter and obviously made a big impact with readers. Nicholas Gurewitch’s brilliant Perry Bible Fellowship (as seen in the pages of the Guardian) also did well, picking up two awards; I have to add that I was pleased to see the always excellent Brian K Vaughan winning the Best Writer award for Y: the Last Man. The series has now concluded and I have to say I thought it was one of the most interesting comics series from a mainstream publisher I’ve read in ages and an unusual spin on the great science fiction cliche of the last man in the world, usually neatly sidestepping the many pitfalls and stereotypes such a story could easily have fallen into, along the way delivering some memorable characters and a fascinating perspective on gender roles and relationships, as well as providing a great adventure story. If you didn’t get into Y when it was running there’s the first in a new set of large, deluxe volumes coming from DC soon which will collect ten issues’ worth each, making a very handy way into the series for newbies (and I heartily recommend you do pick it up).
