Vicky and Rich, organiser of the Hi-Ex comics convention in the Scottish Highlands city of Inverness tell me that as part of their outreach programme they are inviting kids in the region to take part in a comics art competition, where one of the judges will be top Scottish comics scribe Alan Grant. Its a nice idea and I have to say one of the aspects of the first Hi-Ex cons I liked was the really warm, family atmosphere – there were happy kids wandering around with their parents clutching comics and sketches and I know the kid-oriented events were a huge success, doubtless helped by the outreach work the guys did with local schools and groups to promote reading (and making) comics outside of the actual weekend event itself. All of which contributed to the success of Hi-Ex and the happy crowds in my opinion.
The competition is split into two categories for age ranges 5 to 12 and 12 to 16; entries can be in any style but should have original characters and a Scottish theme, with prizes of toys, comics goodies and more, with the winners having their strips published in the Hi-Ex programme. The closing date is December 15th and full details and terms can be found here.
