Hugo Awards 2008

Worldcon took place over the weekend in Denver, Colarado and the annual and extremely prestigious Hugo awards for science fiction and fantasy were announced. Michael Chabon – a quite brilliant writer who has delighted readers of both prose and comics – won the Best Novel category for The Yiddish Policeman’s Union, an alternate history tale where the fledgling state of Israel was wiped out not long after being founded and so a large colony of Jews settle in Alaska, where the story picks up with our very down-at-heels police detective and an incredibly well-realised society and characters.

The best Dramatic Presentation Long Form went to the movie adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess’ Stardust, which may not be the most original fantasy tale but it was one of the more delightful ones. Best Dramatic Presentation Short Form went to Blighty’s own Doctor Who for the brilliantly creep episode Blink, penned by Steven Moffat. Full details of the category winners can be found on the official site.
