Art and animation, Awards

The UK’s largest opening drawing competition, the Jerwood Drawing Prize, has announced this year’s winner. Warren Baldwin was selected from a shortlist of 63 drawings (whittled down from some 2, 500 entrants) for his Study for Portrait (see below), a sketch using pencils and charcoal. The prize comes with £6, 000 and a show of all the shortlisted winners at the Jerwood Space gallery in London; for more details check the official site. (via the BBC)

And the BBC also has a small picture gallery of the main winner, runners-up and other selected drawings – I was particularly taken with this lovely one by Tobias Teschner, entitled Nurembergspot, a pencil drawing which won Tobias a handy £1, 000 for a special student prize (and for some reason makes me think on a disturbing fairy tale); I know this isn’t comics but it is some lovely visual art I thought you’d enjoy:
