Joe Johnston to direct Captain America

The Hollywood Reporter announces that Joe Johnston, a name well known to fans of fantastical cinema for work on Jurassic Park, Star Wars, Rocketeer and a slew of other works, has been appointed to direct a big screen outing for Marvel’s Captain America: “This is a guy who designed the vehicles for ‘Star Wars,’ who storyboarded the convoy action sequence for ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark. From ‘Rocketeer’ to ‘October Sky’ to ‘The Wolfman,’ you can look at pieces of his movies and see how they lead to this one,” Kevin Feige of Marvel.

From the HR article it looks like we are looking at two movies as it states Johnston will be involved with First Avenger: Captain America, set in World War II but “the character will appear in the modern day-set Avengers”, with both movies set for the summer of 2011. No cast or even scriptwriters have been announced yet, although Marvel has apparently been taking pitches. Wonder who is going to play the Cap? The Rumour Mill was churning out possible Steve Rogers even before this announcement, including, I seem to recall, claiming Will Smith was in the frame for the iconic role at one point.
