Comics and cartoons

Lew Stringer unearths some work by Les Barton, who passed away recently; in this case Lew has found some cartoons that were more adult in nature, being created for 1950s men’s magazines rather than comics, fairly tame by today’s standards but probably racy for the early 50s, coming complete with glamour model pinup pics (Lew uses the fine old Brit term “dolly birds” which I haven’t heard anyone use in years).

(Les Barton cartoon for You’ve Had It Summer Special, trading on the well worn stereotype of ‘the woman driver’ (or in this case, rider); thank goodness such sexual stereotyping isn’t practised in today’s society. Except in sitcoms, magazines and numerous adverts… borrowed from Lew’s blog)

  1. Lew Stringer Says:

Er, yeah, sorry for the use of “dolly birds”. I picked up the phrase from all that time traveling I do to find these old comics y’know. ;-)
