London Underground Comics – celebrating Christmas, leaving Camden

London Underground Comics has made two announcements – a Christmas party bash and also that they are vacating their now-famous Camden Market pitch at the end of December. Yes, after a highly successful (and highly visible) run in Camden, where they have sold several thousand independently created comics, they’re moving on, but it isn’t the end of LUC:

on the 20th of December, London Underground Comics packs it’s Camden knapsack and moves on to pastures new. Next year will see our core team continue to pioneer new methods of selling comics to the public; in the pipeline are film festivals, music gigs and art exhibitions, kids workshops and club nights. Thought you’d seen it all? Think again. Because next year sees the start of even bigger, better and more stylish comics festivals at the same affordable price for artists that we have always championed. We’ll have live music, films and exhibitions in some of the sexiest venues in London.”

The first of these new events will be LUC’s Christmas bash at the Alphabet Bar in Oxford Circus on December 13th, a combination party with food, drink and music combined with a display of artwork and a communal table for creators to sell their comics from. Which all sounds fun and again, like the successful market location they are leaving, it takes comics into places where they will be seen by non-comics folks as well, not just the dedicated comics reader, and make it look fun and hip to be into that scene.  Oli, naturally enough, has a video up on the subject.

Brilliant news. I love love LOVE Christmas parties in London so I look forward to this one. Shame about packing up from Camden but I guess it’s time to move on. If you guys are selling at festivals and stuff I would recommend you try it at comedy nights too, you’d get a good audience for your material there. There’s always an awards ceremony on around London for whatever reason so maybe you could sponsor one. Just an idea.
