Malice in Sunderland?

A new film take on Alice in Wonderland, entitled Malice in Sunderland, will now be relocated from Tyneside to Southend, which is a shame since as anyone who knows their Lewis Carroll (and/or has read Bryan Talbot’s brilliant Alice in Sunderland) will be aware that the original story and its creator have strong links to the Sunderland area. From the BBC article it looks like the main reason for the location change was money – Screen East in Southend have lined up £250, 000 in funding. The film, which will star Mischa Barton, will also be re-titled now to Malice in Wonderland. Tom Harvey of Northern Film and Media said they had funding to offer but it was conditional on being spent on local talent, which they considered more important than any one production coming into the region.

Sunderland is on Wearside ……not Tyneside. Sorry to be pedantic but we feel strongly about that sort of reference.
