Various news services are reporting that a man has been arrested by police and charged with illegally killing an animal from an endangered species. The man who was wearing antique armour plate and would only give his name as ‘George’ was charged under the Protection of Wildlife Act after admitting killing a dragon. Far from trying to hide this slaughter of a seriously endangered species (there are very few dragons left in the wild in Europe now and they have proved impossible to breed in captivity) this George character is believed to have rejoiced in his act, with some unconfirmed reports stating that he got his friend ‘squire’ to film the deed on his mobile to upload to YouTube. Remember, kids, rare animals like dragons are an important part of our world’s biodiversity and should be enjoyed, not killed.

(Raphael’s Saint George Fighting Dragon, which currently hangs in the enormsous Musée du Louvre in Paris; as you can see from the painting the fight has taken place next to a barber’s shop)

Which is all my taciturn Scottish way of saying happy Saint George’s Day.
